How I Work

I work with each client differently, depending on the specific needs of the client.

Typically, things begin with a free consultation to discuss the scope and goals of the project, and to see whether we are comfortable with each other. I prefer to work on a project basis rather than on an hourly basis, but there are some exceptions.

If things go well, I’ll produce a simple agreement that includes milestones and deliverables (or we can start with your legal contract if you prefer). If the agreement is acceptable, you'll return a signed copy along with an initial good faith payment.

Then we get into the content, which happens in two ways. First, I’ll typically do my own online and book-based research, and begin to develop an information database using a program like OmniOutliner Pro. At the same time, I’ll conduct one or more in-depth phone-based (or in-person) interviews with you and your experts to uncover as much information as possible.

Based on what we know at this point, I’ll come back with a proposed table of contents. Once you sign off on the table of contents, I’ll either conduct more research, or start the actual writing.

This process varies, of course, depending on the nature of the final project, the availability of information resources, and the timing of the overall project. If you are someone who likes working very closely with a writer, we can do that, but if you prefer to have a semi-finished product delivered to your electronic doorstep, we can do it that way too.
